Blessed José Gregorio Hernández

Born in Isnotú, Trujillo State, (October 26, 1864 – June 29, 1919), son of Benigno Hernández Manzaneda and Josefa Antonia Cisneros Mansilla.

Blessed José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros was known for his kindness, righteousness, and genuine dedication to alleviating human suffering. He studied elementary school in Trujillo until he was 13, when he moved to Caracas.

He was an outstanding student and graduated with a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1884. He pursued his medical degree at the Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, graduating on June 28, 1888.

While practicing his profession in Caracas, he earned a scholarship to travel to Europe to study in Paris and deepen his knowledge in Microbiology, Normal Histology, Pathology, Bacteriology, and Experimental Physiology.

Upon his return from France, he was appointed professor of the first class of Bacteriology in South America. He was a professor for 30 years, from 1891 to 1916, and devoted himself to teaching and his professional and religious practice.

Distinguished by his unwavering faith, perfect chastity, humility and profound simplicity, professional excellence, tender devotion to the Virgin, and great love for God and people. On two occasions, he wanted to become a priest, but his physical condition was his greatest impediment.

Among his scientific publications are "Elementos de Bacteriología" (1906), "Sobre la Angina de Pecho de Naturaleza Palúdica," and "Elementos de Filosofía" (1912).

On June 29, 1919, while taking medicine to a needy patient, he was hit by a car in the Pastora area. Venezuelans revere him for his virtues as a doctor and his religious vocation, to which various miracles and healings are attributed.

In 1949 the Vatican began its investigation, and in 1986 they assigned him the hierarchy of "Venerable", one of the steps in the process of beatification according to the parameters of the Catholic Church.

His remains lie in the Temple of the La Candelaria parish, after being in the General Cemetery of the South for a long time, where it was the most visited tomb.

In April 2020, the Vatican Theological Commission announced the approval of the miracle of the venerable doctor José Gregorio Hernández in the healing of a young girl named Yaxury Solórzano.

On March 10, 2017, Yaxury Solórzano was shot in the head, causing heavy bleeding and loss of brain mass. The doctors assured that if she survived, she would remain in a vegetative state. Just 20 days later, she walked out of the hospital talking, and in 2020, she was not only talking; she's a completely normal girl.

On June 19, 2020, Pope Francis decreed his beatification after the miracle was unanimously recognized by all the cardinals who studied the case.

The beatification date is April 30, 2021.
